Frequently Asked Questions
All new students come to practice with questions. And frequently the questions are similar in nature. And sometimes new students come to us from other schools and want to ask specific questions about how our programs would be different or similar to what they’ve trained before. Take a few moments to read below to give yourself a jump start on training. Of course if you have a specific question not listed, please contact us and we’ll be happy to talk with you.

Can I start training with no previous wrestling or martial arts training?
Absolutely. In fact, the majority of our students come in with no previous training. While previous wrestling or martial arts training can be beneficial, all new students are invited to train. Students with no previous experience are given extra attention early in their training to help them with the basics and fundamentals at a pace they are comfortable with and with no pressure.
    How are the classes structured?
All of our technique classes start with a warm-up to get the students physically ready to train. We strive to limit injuries by making sure students are properly conditioned and ready for physical activity. If students are injured or have physical limitations, training will be adjusted and personalized to each student. After warm-ups, the instructor for the class will teach the techniques of the day and follow that up with drills specific to reinforcing the techniques shown. Some classes end with sparring or rolling, but neither are required if the student does not feel ready to participate.
    Would I have to compete?
No students have to compete. We recommend students try a competition at some point just to push their comfort zone and try the skills they learn under pressure. Competition is not a requirement for promotion.
    How safe are the classes?
Classes are very safe. All students are asked to set their egos at the door and focus on proper technique over trying to be overly competitive. Injuries are always a possibility, but we do everything we can to limit those chances. Our instructors are constantly observing the classes and correcting unsafe behavior. Students are also held to gym rules and a code of ethics to ensure a safe environment.
What equipment would I need to buy? Do I have to buy it through Flashback?
Each program has different equipment requirements. Certainly no equipment is needed during the ONE FREE CLASS TRIAL OFFER. Once a student begins taking regular classes, some equipment will be needed. For Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu a uniform (gi) will be needed. Optional equipment includes a mouth guard and groin protection. For Kickboxing, students will need boxing gloves, a mouth guard and hand wraps. Optional equipment includes groin protection, jump rope and sparring pads. Flashback Martial Arts does offer for sale all the equipment a student will need to start training. Students are also able to purchase equipment on their own at local stores or on the internet.
How do I earn rank or promotions?
Rank depends on the program. Kickboxing for example does not have rank. In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, rank is earned with a combination of learned techniques, attendance, and ability to help out newer students to the school. We try to foster a learning environment more than a competitive environment. We truly understand that the better we can make the newer students, the faster they will be able to push the higher belts to improve.
